Thornton Wedding Reception Photography | Tina & Brent
Tina and Brent got married abroad, then came home to Thornton to celebrate with the people who could not make the trip. I was hired just to cover the reception, ninety minutes at their apartment complex's community space, and it turned into one of the most purely candid shoots on the books this year.
The whole event had a come-as-you-can, leave-when-you-need-to feel. Guests brought their own dishes for a potluck spread instead of a catered sit-down meal, which set a relaxed tone for the entire evening. Nobody was managing a timeline. People just showed up, ate, talked, and enjoyed themselves.
Brent is a serious fan of Highland cows, so a petting zoo made an appearance, young Highland calves included. Brent came dressed for the occasion in a full suit, a top hat, and a cane, and at one point he stepped away from petting one of the calves and turned to look at the camera with the kind of unguarded, genuine smile you cannot direct someone into. It is one of my favorite images of the year, precisely because nobody posed for it.
With no ceremony to shoot and no formal timeline to manage, the whole ninety minutes came down to reading the room and staying ready. That is a different kind of work than a full wedding day, but it is exactly where candid photography earns its keep.
